Welcome to ADS London!
The American Dental Society of London is an association of dental graduates who have studied in the USA or Canada, and is instituted for the study and discussion of dentistry and it's allied arts and sciences. We have regular meetings, which are continuing education accredited, including dinners and discussions on a wide range of topics, with guest speakers and there is also an annual social event. A close relationship is also maintained with the American Dental Society of Europe.
The American Dream!
At the beginning of 2011 I set off on a three month externship to the University of Iowa, USA.
As a fourth year dental student at Bart’s and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry I had the opportunity to experience and compare the practice of dentistry in London with that of Iowa, whilst also experiencing the culture and history of the United States of America.
The externship consisted of two challenging five week rotations: the first was Oral Surgery where I was expected to perform multiple extractions per session with many surgical procedures. Following this I rotated through Operative Dentistry. This was more of the everyday filling and drilling, however both rotations were demanding with full days filled with lectures, tutorials and clinics; there wasn’t a moment to spare. The nature of dentistry, as it is a post graduate degree, meant it was a lot more demanding than what I was used to.
My enthusiasm to apply for the exchange programme was promoted by several previous trips to USA dental schools. I was inspired by how different Dental Institutes are operated and deliver dentistry. Whist in Iowa I investigated the similarities and differences in the delivery of dental education. I met with the head of dental education and was able to attain a deep understanding into the education system and clinical licensing exams. I was fortunate to experience first hand how American dental students make the most of their clinical time and curriculum.
I lived on campus at a Medical Fraternity with 25 other people. It was amazing to live with such a vibrant bunch of talented future doctors. I was further excited to have met other fellow students from across the world who were staying at the house.
Life in Iowa for three months was a pleasant change from the hustle bustle of The City and strangely it grow on me. The charm of the state in the Midwest of America was something that I had not experienced before. It gave me an appreciation for the magnitude of the USA; I had previously spent time in the south & west coast, whereas Iowa - though very cold - had much to offer.
With the much appreciated help of the American Dental Society of London this externship gave me the opportunity to embark on this journey and practice dentistry in the USA, an achievement I am very proud of.
